Biography |
| I have been painting in oils since being introduced to them at Helston School in the 1960s. Originating from Greatwork, a small mining hamlet which sits between the Tregonning and Godolphin hills and within sight of Mounts Bay in Cornwall my work has always been influenced by the coast and countryside of this area. |
| I love the contours of the hills that run gently down to the sea and the narrow lanes, quiet as a whisper on a hot summers day. I remember walking along them towards Godolphin, or to Germoe and Praa Sands where the lanes open out to a width of turquoise sea and spacious windswept sands. Family memories of time spent along these lanes come with vibrancy and warmth. |
| The hedgerows here, where I still regularly walk, hold amazing shapes and colours of wild growth and the hills give views to both Mounts Bay on one coast and St. Ives on the other. In my work I like to create a contemporary view, imbibed with time, of this little corner of the world. |
Working Methods |
| "Generally I like to apply the paint in layers, gradually building ideas into the painting. Several canvases are worked on at the same time, allowing for drying in between. I almost always cover the canvas in a bright colour first, perhaps yellow, orange or red though this colour may not be part of the finished picture. For some illustrative pieces the content is carefully drawn first and the colours painted in more evenly." |
Work is generally produced for galleries or exhibitions but Audrey also does some Illustration and takes commissions. |
