He was born in Yorkshire and spent his early years at school in Hanover and Rome. In 1921 he studied at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Rome, where he was awarded the title of Professor of architectural design in 1924. After travelling Italy and Egypt he returned to England in 1925.
During the following 6 years he exhibited drawings and watercolours in London, became an elected member of Soc. In 1936 he travelled all over China, the Gobbi Desert Mongolia, and left Shanghai August 1937 at the start of the Sino/Japanese war. In the years that followed he Exhibited at the Fine Art Society Gallery, London, and the Gallery above Selfridges, this being his 3rd one-man exhibition.
1948 he moved to Cornwall to paint. He taught, lectured and exhibited all over Cornwall and was later made life member of St Ives Society of Artists. He used a variety of mediums, watercolour landscapes being his forte, but he used brush and palette knife for his oil paintings, pen and ink for his finely detailed drawings and copperplate for his etchings, he also painted with egg tempera. Many of his works were inspired by his travels to China and Europe as well as Cornwall and were sold at his gallery and studio in the 1960's and 70's.
